The first phase of Lok Sabha elections concluded on Friday. In the first phase, voting took place on 102 seats in 21 states. Till 7 pm, 60.03 percent voting was recorded on these seats. The highest turnout was recorded in Tripura where 80.17% votes were cast.
According to the report of news agency INS Hindi, with the completion of the elections, the fate of 8 Union Ministers and many big opposition leaders was decided in the voting machine. A total of 1,625 candidates were in the fray for these 102 seats.Union Ministers whose fate was decided in the voting machine on Friday include Nitin Gadkari from Nagpur, Sarbananda Sonowal from Dibrugarh, Kiran Rijiju from Arunachal West, Jitendra Singh from Udhampur, Bhupendra Yadav from Alwar, Arjun Ram Meghwal from Bikaner and Nilgiris from Tamil Nadu. According to the Election Commission, 1.87 lakh polling stations were set up across the country for the first phase of voting. There were a total of more than 16.63 crore voters at these polling stations. Surveillance was maintained at 1,374 interstate and 162 international border posts to keep an eye on illegal consignments of liquor, narcotics, cash etc. In order to conduct peaceful elections, apart from road routes and borders, strict surveillance was also maintained on sea and air routes.
Voting started at 7 am and ended at 6 pm. (Poll closing time differed in some places). Of the more than 16.63 crore voters on these 102 seats, 8.4 crore were men, 8.23 crore were women and 11,371 were of third gender.
There were 35.67 lakh voters who had this first opportunity to exercise their franchise. Additionally, there were 3.51 crore youth voters in the age group of 20-29 years and more than 14.14 lakh registered voters above 85 years of age. 13.89 lakh persons with disabilities (PWD) were also voters in this election. They were given the option to vote from home. 41 helicopters, 84 special trains and around 1 lakh vehicles were deployed to transport polling and security personnel.
Webcasting was done in more than 50 percent of the polling stations with the deployment of micro observers at all the polling stations. The Election Commission had deployed a total of 4,627 flying squads, 5,208 statistical monitoring teams, 2,028 video monitoring teams and 1,255 video viewing teams.
Important seats where elections were held in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections included Nagpur, Kanyakumari, Chennai Central, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Kairana, Pilibhit, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Jaipur, Chhindwara, Jamui, Bastar, Nainital and Lakshadweep.
The main faces of the first phase include Jitin Prasad from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, Karti Chidambaram from Tamil Nadu, BJP State President K from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Dayanidhi Maran from Annamalai, Chennai Central and Nakulnath from Chhindwara were also included. The Election Commission had deployed more than 18 lakh polling officers to ensure peaceful and fair elections.
